. now members of congress from both parties are demanding answers. on the ground in benghazi, investigators can't even get to the scene. nbc's mike viqueira is joining us from the white house with more on this. mike, how big a deal is this reversal? >> reporter: well, it's very controversial and potentially a big deal. the question all along is ever since those september 11th attacks what caused them, what was the motivation for the people who killed four americans including the american ambassador. and at the beginning as everybody is well aware at this point, the white house insisted that these were spontaneous demonstrations, a reaction to that anti-islamic film, much like the demonstrations that had happened just hours earlier in cairo and subsequently swept through the muslim world from the middle east to indonesia. they denied that there was any terrorism link involved. from the beginning, republicans and other critics have questioned that. they said that the president and the administration have not wanted to admit a terror link in an election year around 9/11. they sa
:00, there are reports of shooting and smoke rising at the consulate in benghazi, 800 miles away. at 7:51 p.m., reuters reports at least one american was dead at our consulate in benghazi. we now know the romney campaign was discussing the events unfolding in the middle east throughout the day. as governor romney flew from nevada to florida, his top foreign policy and political advisers held a conference call to discuss what they would say about the crisis. well, when romney landed, they showed him a statement and he approved it. it said, i'm outraged by the attacks on american diplomatic missions in libya and egypt and by the death of an american consulate worker in benghazi. it's disgraceful that the obama administration's first response was not to condemn the attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks. the campaign did exactly what mitt romney promised his high-dollar donors he would do in may. he attempted to capitalize on a foreign crisis. look at the statement again. "it's disgraceful that the obama administration's first response was not to condemn att
and available on youtube. >> would you call the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi an act of terrorism? >> i have no doubt about that. and it's a preplanned act of terrorism directed against american citizens. >> do you think the movie had anything to do with this attack on the consulate? >> not on this attack. not on this attack. it has nothing to do with this attack. >> and yesterday white house press secretary told reporters traveling on air force one, "it's the case that it's our view as an administration, the president's view, that it was a terrorist attack." it's the first explicit acknowledgement that the president believes the libyan attack was an act of terror. secretary of state hillary clinton speaking at the united nations on wednesday became the highest ranked official to publicly say there was a link between the attack and al qaeda. >> for some time al qaeda and other groups have launched attacks and kidnappings into neighboring countries and they are working with other violent extremists to undermine the democratic transitions under way in north africa as we tragically s
kerry is demanding he tell the truth about benghazi. every time you turn around, underneath this zone of the great speaker there is a president with massive unemployment. they just downgraded the economy for the last three months yesterday. the manufacturing index is collapsing. and so i'm just suggesting -- >> this benghazi story by the way is a huge story. right now dee dee myers the fbi won't even go into benghazi because it is so dangerous which leads you to wonder why they didn't listen to warnings before the attack and before our u.s. ambassador was killed. this is one of those issues and i think charles krauthammer said it perfectly today in "the washington post" that if mitt romney actually knew how to put forth an argument. >> right. >> he could really be grabbing attention. >> one of the problems was he jumped out ahead of this and politicized it in the hours immediately after the attack which discredited him in the media term as a spokesman for the other side. >> it was -- krauthammer said he could have done it so much better. >> and established himself as an alternative vo
.s. embassy in benghazi, including the ambassador christopher stevens. this is our diplomats killed in action. i remember the return at andrews in 1998 when president clinton and hillary clinton in august of 1998 received the coffins unloaded from kenya and tan sa nia from our two u.s. embassies there. >> i spent the vast majority of my life talking about politics and the political consequences of things that happen. i always say to people it is a worthwhile reminder that there are consequences to things like this. and they do happen in a political context. we should never lose sight if you're a democratic or republican or independent or whatever you want to be, people have lost their lives. i think the interview on "rock center" with the ambassador's sister really drives that home. these are lives and real consequences. the politics are the politics. they're going to exist, let's not forget that other piece that matter more. >> our condolences to all. >>> that is it for this edition and for a very difficult week in u.s. foreign policy. my colleague tamron hall has a look at what's next on "n
.s. consulate in benghazi that killed four americans. the top libyan security physician said the attack was possibly aided by infiltrators who knew the route that consulate staff was trying to use to escape. now, two americans killed in the attack were identified thursday as two former navy s.e.a.l.s. tyrone woods of portland, oregon, former military veteran and father of two and glen doherty from massachusetts. back at home mitt romney made sulgs jobs on foreign policy. campaigning in battleground virginia, romney offered this message. >> american leadership, the middle east needs american leadership and i intend to be a president that provides the leadership that america respects. >> and romney was relatively measured responding to this barb of the president concerning an interviewing on telemundo. >> i have observed there's a tendency to shoot without aim. >> asked about it, romney chose no, sir to swing back. >> the exact same conclusion the white house reached. the statement was inappropriate. that's why they backed away from it as well. >> but the romney campaign has escalated the
what happened in benghazi, libya was a terrorist attack and pledged to bring those who murdered ambassador chris stevens and the three others to justice. the secretary of state saying what happened in libya was a terrorist attack and will not rest until we've tracked down and brought to justice the terrorists who murdered four americans. we'll have much more on the secretary of state as well as republicans who are not satisfied with the investigation thus far from the administration and from the state department. at least 15 people are dead in pakistan as a new wave of protests over the anti-islam film "innocence of muslim" turned violent. thousands of muslims protested in at least half a dozen countries. nbc is live in kabul, afghanistan. many thought we would see protests over the french cartoon released, but these are still again over this movie or film made in the united states. >> reporter: hi there, tamron. the protests were actually about both. the majority was pointed at that film. not enough information has gone out to many countries about those cartoons published in fr
in benghazi that killed ambassador chris stooerevens and three oth measures. members from both parties want more information. >> the issue goes beyond the day-to-day political infighting and you have members of both parties asking for more details in part because of the gravity of the situation and because there's an evolving eleven the information that's becoming public. john kerry, who heads the senate foreign relations committee, has put together a letter he sent to the state department with some members of the republican party as well asking for more information. now, some of what we are seeing, some of that pressure does have a more partisan edge where you have critics in the republican party who have put letters forward to secretary clinton, to the u.n. ambassador, susan rice specifically talking about what they believe were misstatements by the administration or a lack of being, i guess, savvy enough to suspect a terrorist attack, which some republican members like john mccain, like kelly ayotte have been saying was more likely than a spontaneous mob reaction. so there is a bit of th
killed in benghazi. ryan calling the white house's response quote slow and confused. >>> they first said that it was a youtube video and a spontaneous mob. we now know it was a planned terrorist attack. if this was one tragic incident, that would be a tragedy in and of itself. the problem is it's part of a bigger picture of the fact that the obama foreign policy is unraveling literally before our eyes on our tv screens. >>> this morning, the obama campaign defended its reaction to events in libbia the campaign's senior adviser said the white house was transparent in its response and dealt with new facts as they amerge. >> as the director of national intelligence said on friday, that was the original information that was given to us. what we don't need is a president or an administration that shoots first and asks questions later. at this point this is what we know and we are thoroughly investigating and that's what exactly what you should do. >>> new this hour, nbc news learned a short time ago that mitt romney is running through a full mock debate this afternoon at an event center in bo
that this is not first and foremost a political story, this is likely a story that happened in benghazi. certainly it isn't great for them, on the other hand, president obama does have a strong record on terrorism, one that the public has appreciated and has shown up in the polls for quite some time. i think it's hard to argue that a foreign policy event coming this late in the campaign is going to trump the white house. >> we want to go to some early voting nowing going with you and the dnc, kicked off their early voting bus tour in iowa. ohio residents, they can start early voting day after tomorrow in ohio. it seems like the democrats have an early ground game this morning. >> it seems that republicans on election day, it could be as much as 40% of the electorate that weighs in before actually election day. it's one of the interesting parts of this campaign is figuring out if it's going to change the message, if it's going to change the message of the campaign. it's going to be more states and more people than it has been, in both absen tent and voting than it has been -- >> i do want to take a look a
other americans. a crowd attacked the base of an islamic militia in benghazi in support of the u.s., they were angry about the murder of the four americans. in fact the protesters drove the militia out of the city. joining me now is general jack jacobs, it's good to have you here. as we talk about these protesters driving out this militia group and we can see the anger that they are now organizing as a country against these people that killed our four americans, this militia was a militia that we were originally these militia were working with the ouster of gadhafi, correct? >> yes, revolutions are really messy things. it was more than just a protest. as you said they drove these guys out. and the crowds actually burned down several headquarters of several different militant groups. ostensibly these were spontaneous reactions to the death of ambassador stephens. we have to remember that there's a contest for dominance in this area of libya. one way to get rid of the guys who are opposed to you, make your life a little bit difficult if they gain a foothold is to drive them out. th
